SKIFF

BRAND IDENTITY, WEB DESIGN
2022
PENTAGRAM
Skiff is a workspace for communication that provides total privacy through end-to-end encryption utilizing the decentralization of Web3 technologies. Our team worked closely on the project with the leadership at Skiff, including Co-Founders Jason Ginsberg and Andrew Milich to develop a visual language for the brand that could stand amongst the dominant online workspaces while remaining resonant with the user base that Skiff had cultivated. At the time of the rebrand, Skiff had more than 100,000 users, including The Guardian news organization.

Responsibilities:

The platform allows users to write, edit, and collaborate in real-time with their colleagues, like Google Docs, but is built on a foundation of end-to-end encryption, so it does not have access to users’ documents and data as Google does. The company is redesigning software with privacy in mind, and the brand refresh coincides with the rollout of new products like Skiff Drive and Skiff Mail. The icon, colors, and typography reference the sleek, timeless look of modernist design to convey a sense of trust and signal something less tied to trends.

Skiff’s art direction is a representation of the digital space and the user’s control over their privacy. The user and their data are symbolized by colorful circles. These circular forms vacillate between full resolution and blurred abstraction as if having their access toggled on and off depending on the viewer's level of clearance. An inviting way of conceptualizing encryption for current and prospective users as Skiff continues to grow.

The Skiff symbol depicts a closed network. A representation of the airtight privacy that their end-to-end encryption offers. The logo is wrapped in a pattern of lines that evoke information, and the circular revolution suggests ever-vigilant security, as well as creative renewal. A series of animations were developed for the Skiff website to display the functions offered in their workspace and illustrate how their encryption network functions. All animations are fully Lottie-JSON compatible for seamless quality when hosted on the site.
